Why Are There Flags and Markings on My Property?

When new utility services begin construction in your neighborhood, you may notice different colored flags and paint along your easement and right-of-way. These flags are used to identify the locations of important infrastructure like water, electric and sewer lines.

They are for your safety and for the crews, so please do not move them.

What do utility flag colors mean?

These flags and markers are our eyes to the ground below. Each color represents a different utility or service:

• White: Proposed excavation
• Green: Sewer and drain lines
• Blue: Water
• Red: Power lines, cables, conduit, and lighting cables
• Yellow: Gas, oil, steam, petroleum, or gaseous materials
• Orange: Communications, alarm or signal lines, cables, or conduit

Can I Mow Over Utility Flags?

Unfortunately, construction crews are only good as the locates placed, so if they are moved or incorrectly marked, we run the risk of damaging other utility lines.

If you need to mow, try to maneuver around the flags so they aren’t improperly placed. And if you need to pick them up, make sure they go back into the location they were in.

Is there anything I should tell the construction crew before they start?

Most crews do not know where your sprinkler systems, landscape lighting, or any pet fences are placed, so please let Tachus or the crews know of their location to avoid damage to them.

When can I remove the flags from my yard?

You can remove the flags as soon as the construction job is complete. Crews won’t return to pick up the flags. So, once you’re installed, you’ll be set to throwaway the flags.
